From Grass Root to Bearing Fruit - The History, Mission and Purpose of the Calumet Heights Community Coalition

The Calumet Heights Community Coalition is a true grass roots organization born out of the Open Air Drug Market Intervention (DMI) pilot program initiated in Spring 2008.
The goal of the DMI program was empowering and engaging residents of the Calumet Heights community in the on-going process of sustaining safety and improving the quality of life in the neighborhood. The DMI program created a unique partnership between US Department of Justice, US Attorney’s Office, 8th Ward Aldermanic Office, Community Assisted Policing (CAPS), Chicago Police Department (004th District), Southlawn United Methodist Church and the Safer Foundation.

The purpose of the Calumet Heights Community Coalition is to promote neighborhood security and unity. The Coalition improves the quality of life of residents by leveraging existing and emerging community assets, creating a forum where residents, block clubs, government, police, businesses, and community based organizations connect.

With the support of its collaborating partners, the Calumet Heights Community Coalition accomplishes its goals through convening community meetings and forums, promoting positive alternatives and activities for the families and youth (such as community festivals, family literacy nights, movie nights, game nights, police roll calls, anti-violence rallies etc.), disseminating vital information, and addressing neighborhood concerns.
